Stage for the French show Madonna collapse: 1 dead
The roof of a stage being built for a Madonna concert in the French port of Marseilles, the city collapsed Thursday, leaving one worker dead and nine wounded, said city officials.
The roof at the Stage Velodrome stadium came down on top of several workers.
A worker was killed and two of the wounded were seriously injured, said Maurice Di Nocera, Marseilles city councilman in charge of major events, said on France-Info radio. The seriously injured were an American and a Briton, said the central fire department of Marseilles. The French worker was killed. Identities were not released.
Four other people had multiple injuries, including fractured bones, and three others suffered minor injuries, the fire department said. All the wounded were taken to local hospitals.
Di Nocera said that the roof was about two thirds complete when it collapsed a little bit at the top of several workers.
"In the absence of immediate collapse, which allows several people to leave, to avoid being beaten," he said.
The cause of the collapse of the roof was not clear. Police and emergency officials cordoned off the area.
Madonna’s "Sticky and Sweet" tour is due to arrive on Sunday in Marseilles, but the concert was canceled due to "a rebuilding phase, it is not possible," said Di Nocera.
Marseilles prosecutors asked the regional security agency to investigate the cause of the accident.
