why tapes?

compact discs get scratched, scuffed, corroded and cracked. if any of these things happen to your cd, it's ruined forever and you need a new one. they also lack the warmth and personality that you hear on analog media. if you reach under the seat of your car and find a naked cd, chances are it's already messed up. but if you find a tape, you just wipe off the jam and then it's good as new. if it breaks, you tape it back together. if it gets left in the sun, just unscrew it and pop it into a new cassette cartridge. record over it if you want to. pop it in a 4-track and add to it. the possibilities go on and on.

the beginning

this label was originally started back in 2000 by mark morrison and mike coleman in lancaster, ca. it began to create an outlet for the abundance of music that was happening locally in the mojave desert. we decided on the name brown interiour music, as a refference to the inside contents of an audio cassette. we wanted to have a tape label in the spirit of great tape labels like shrimper and american tapes. of course, a few CDs have slipped through the cracks from time to time.

the middle

eventually mike moved to st louis, mark moved to long beach, and the whole thing sort of fell through. but thanks to april boehlert, our designated archivist, the masters were safe and all in one place. a few very short-run releases were issued between 2002-2005 bearing the brown interiour seal, but these releases were only available in-person.

the present

the label is reborn in 2006 when matt topartzer and andrew dorsett joined forces with mark to bring forth a new phase in musical history. having relocated to olympia, washington, the resources for a fresh start were endless. we are in action with a delicious platter of exciting new music (as well as some cherished and long out of print reissues) for the ears of the world, and are currently olympia's top cassette label. invention/preservation. rock if you want to.

the future

who knows? we have plans for several exciting split releases with folks like the good good/adrian orange, and the amazing and incredible randy/robert. prospective releases from reid urban, joseba irazoki, dylan shearer, and eli moore are underway. and we also might be putting out some films (VHS only!). stay tuned!
